Stop #7: McFarland Hill Delta

One mile east of Ellsworth on Route 1. Drive by—no specific stop, view from roadway.

Geology:
McFarland Hill Delta: This is a flat-topped deposit of sand and gravel built up to a former sea level of about 250 feet by a sediment-laden meltwater stream discharging into the sea from an ice tunnel at the base of the receding glacier. This feature is called an ice-contact delta. The elevation of the outer edge approximates the former relative sea level. As you drive along the road, note the flat top and interior composition and layering in the gravel pits.
