Stop #41: Drowned Forest

Location:
Lubec. South of the old cannery buildings near the International Bridge.

N 44°51’39” W 66°58’57”

Geology:
Drowned Forest: Along the beach southwest of Mowry Point, Lubec, there are a few rooted tree stumps visible along the lower portions of the beach at low tide. They grew behind the beach at a time when sea level was about 5 feet lower than today. In response to the rising sea, the beach migrated inland over the trees, exposing their rooted stumps on the seaward side. Note the modern beach and the back-black swamp and trees.
