Geology:
Sea Level Rise: Gates House, Machiasport Historical Society. Comparative photos from today and 1900 show the result of sea level rise and consequent shoreline erosion in the area. Sea level has risen about 5 feet since 1900 and now reaches the foundations of the houses in the foreground.
Modern high tide marked by the seaweed line, as pictured. Major storm events bring seawater up past the Gates House, evidenced by seaweed surrounding the grassy areas near the house’ foundation.
