Stop #28: Moraine

Route 1, between Jonesboro and Machias. Drive by—no specific stop, view from roadway.

Geology:
Moraine: Route 1 climbs a large grounding-line moraine and travels along its crest for about 1.5 miles. The road then turns northeast, crossing several prominent moraines before Machias. All of the moraines were formed in marine waters about 75 feet deep. They belong to the Pineo Ridge Moraine System as it traveled eastward.
