Geology: Fossil Shells: The actively eroding shoreline bluff exposes about 25 feet of late glacial age marine mud. The mud is weathered to a brownish color down to about 12 feet from the surface. Below this level, the blue-gray clay contains a scattering of fossil marine shells about 16,400 years old. This mud, a fine glacial sediment derived from the abrasion of bedrock at the base of the ice was deposited in an Arctic-like ocean close to the glacier margin.
